“Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued a statement last week strongly criticizing the new policy of the United States that limits asylum for victims of domestic violence. He also condemns the administration’s zero tolerance enforcement that has resulted in undocumented families being pulled apart, with young children separated from their parents/guardians at the national border. The body of bishops affirmed his statement. The Cardinal reminds us that as a Church, we address immigration policy as a moral and ethical issue, rooted in the dignity of the human person and the centrality of the family as the foundation of society.
Ultimately, we need to encourage our national leaders to come together to enact a comprehensive reform of our broken immigration system. Any new policy should balance the legitimate concern for secure borders with a fair and humane approach to those seeking to make a new home in our country. Through our grassroots efforts of education, prayer and action, we can help form a national consensus that seeks to provide welcome and opportunity for those fleeing hardships of various kinds in their home countries, just as so many our ancestors did in times past.”
