DEACON’S CORNER…
At Baptism, we receive seven special gifts from the Holy Spirit. These gifts are freely given to us to help us live as followers of Jesus and to build up the Body of Christ, the Church. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are sealed and strengthened within us at Confirmation. These seven gifts help us to respond to the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, to make good choices, and to serve God and others. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord.
Wisdom is the gift of knowing the right choices to make to live a holy life. The gift of wisdom helps you to avoid the things that could lead you away from God. Wisdom has little to do with formal education. A person can have numerous degrees and from the most prestigious universities in the world, but still be lacking in wisdom; it is a gift of the Holy Spirit.
The following is an example from a high school student utilizing the gift of wisdom: “Friday evening was a Holy Day of Obligation and I chose to go to evening Mass and skip going to the High School football game with my friends. I was being guided by the gift of wisdom. I am demonstrating that for me the things of God are above the things of this world.” God bless, Deacon Tom.
